OUR STORY

Read about Our Founder

Conceived in the late 90s and over ten years in the planning and execution, the Pound Ridge Golf Club has taken its place in the pantheon of great metropolitan golf courses. The signature wit of Pete Dye’s designs, his enduring challenge for golfers to bring their best game and his sometimes maddening, more often inspiring, mathematical genius make Pound Ridge one of his most memorable courses. In his own words, “If you create in the mind of a golfer that he can remember some of the holes, that’s extraordinary. And then, if you make it look, and it will look, very demanding, if it’s still playable you’ve hit a home run.”

Crafted by Dye, his son Perry and long-time Dye construction manager/lead shaper Michael Langkau, Pound Ridge Golf Club is a unique and thoroughly modern design in an area previously known for its traditional golf courses. A full bentgrass facility, it is hewn from 172 acres of magnificent cliffs, streams and wooded hills in Westchester County. Dramatic rock formations have been left onsite, creating one of the most visually stunning settings for golf in the U.S. with more than 14,000-linear-feet of rock wall surrounding trees, wetlands and water hazards.

Contoured fairways winding through hardwood forests and fescue mounds lead to open meadows with picturesque green complexes. The property features some of the highest points in the region, offering expansive vistas of the surrounding countryside. Pound Ridge Golf Club requires demanding tee and approach shots to navigate the myriad rock outcroppings, boulders and wetlands. Must-see-it-to-believe-it holes include: the par-5, 13th, home to a giant boulder resting in the middle of the fairway, and the par-3, 15th, dubbed “Headstone,” which features an elongated but shallow 9,000 square-foot green with a magnificent rock face serving as an unpredictable backboard for over-hit shots.

THE EXPERIENCE

Playing at 7,165 yards from the back tees with a par of 72 and a slope of 150, Pound Ridge features five sets of tee boxes that make it appealing to short and long hitters alike. As with all Pete Dye’s courses, the hand of his wife Alice is evident in the providing of well-conceived teeing options for any golfers lacking great length in their shots. The result is a challenging yet eminently playable course for golfers of all ages and abilities who play with intelligence, thought and self-possession.

While not all supposedly classic courses actually beckon golfers to return, Pete Dye’s layouts have an opposite, mesmerizing effect. We believe you will find our course to be one of the most magnetic of the bunch. Play it once and you find yourself smiling at the shots made, and haunted by the opportunities missed, in the strategic puzzle that is the Pound Ridge Golf Club. Dye disciples who have sampled his many masterpieces - Whistling Straits, Casa de Campo, the Ocean Course at Kiawah, TPC Sawgrass, Harbour Town - take notice: Pound Ridge Golf Club is an essential part of any golfer’s collection of Dye-designed courses, and even more accessible than these other golfing shrines due to its location just minutes outside of New York City.
